    Less Collateral Damage

    Collateral damage is causing undue or excess hurt, loss or damage on the way to a goal. There may be a multitude of factors for causing unnecessary casualties while leading employees. A frequent cause is snap decisions. These instant changes are made without meditating on any negative consequences ahead. An associated factor might be the habit of speaking before thinking but using present emotions as a guide. Another reason might be that we digress from our plan.

    Also, our decision may proceed from pent-up emotions of recent managerial clashes, disagreement on procedures or an accumulation of adverse situations. Successful leaders control their anger. Only on rare occasions is anger ever beneficial.

    One way to avoid unnecessary hurt is to clear up misinformation. When motives are misinterpreted, employees amass a cauldron of negative emotions. This causes a slow-down in production because their minds are concentrating on fuming, fussing, and commiserating with coworkers.

    Building unity among workers starts with focusing on one common plan. This plan needs to be retold often in different ways. This helps workers to get on board. There is a satisfaction that comes with being an integral part of a successful group. Remember in school being an important part of the glee club, band or ball team? This spirit remains high when encouragement is sprinkled often instead of criticism, put-downs or grumbling.

    Clear plans projected to employees are essential to avert collateral damage. Encouragement leads a good work force to success.
